Transgender members of the 85-million-strong Anglican faith community will now have the support of the Church of England, after it released guidelines on Tuesday for ceremonies to welcome them. The Church of England, where the Anglican tradition originated, has in recent years moved towards greater acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) people, including addressing homophobic bullying in schools. The public ceremonies aim to affirm the new identity of trans worshippers, according to guidelines published on the Church’s website on Tuesday. Julian Henderson, head of the committee that produced the guidelines, said the decision was “rooted in scripture”. The new guidelines say ministers should address trans members by their chosen name, though some traditionalists in the Church of England argue that gender cannot be changed as it is assigned by God. The wider Anglican body has been divided since 2003 over arguments about gender and sexuality between liberal member churches in the West and their conservative counterparts, mostly in Africa. Leading college faculty union says belief in only 2 genders is based on ‘ideology,' not fact....
One of America’s leading college faculty unions is decrying attempts to define gender as “binary,” and claims that the Trump administration and the “religious fundamentalists” who support such a definition are moved by ideology, not fact.
The American Association of University Professors, which has 500 chapters and 39 state associations, released a statement last month titled “The Assault on Gender and Gender Studies.”
The statement, which was created by AAUP’s subcommittee of Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure and the Committee on Women in the Academic Profession, railed against the Trump administration for considering a plan to define gender as a “biological, immutable condition” defined by a person’s sex at birth.
The plan stoked fears that the word “transgender” could be “defined out of existence.”
The AAUP statement also condemned Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for issuing a decree prohibiting gender studies courses from being taught in universities throughout the country.
The statement also went after administrations in Poland, Brazil and Bulgaria for “attempts to refute the scholarly consensus that gender identity is variable and mutable.”
“Biologists, anthropologists, historians, and psychologists have repeatedly shown that definitions of sex and sexuality have varied over time and across cultures and political regimes,” the AAUP statement reads. “Some of their work suggests that state-enforced preservation of traditional gender roles is associated with authoritarian attempts to control social life and to promise security in troubled times by pledging to protect patriarchal family structures.” Show more

Israel is confident that more countries will move their embassies to Jerusalem and is making preparations in advance.
By Jack Gold, World Israel News
Israel is preparing a special embassy quarter in Jerusalem to facilitate the relocation of more embassies to its capital, Israel National News reported.
Officials from Israel’s Construction and Housing Ministry on Wednesday announced plans to build a complex in the capital with space for nine embassies.
According to the report, the plan is being promoted by Construction and Housing Minister Yoav Galant, who instructed ministry officials to prepare for additional embassy moves.
The new embassy quarter is expected to be established on a plot of land in the Armon HaNatziv neighborhood, on 25 acres of land, and will include both embassy facilities and housing for embassy staff.
Some 60,000 square meters (approx. 646,000 square feet) of building space will be included in the project, with an option to expand to 80,000 square meters (approx.. 861,000 square feet), ministry officials said.
“I am convinced that many more countries will relocate their embassies to Jerusalem,” Galant was quoted as saying by INN, while urging “the international community to relocate their embassies to Jerusalem, our eternal capital. It is the right thing to do. Make the move quickly, the best places are going to be taken quickly.”
Australia is set to formally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel since the country’s national security committee approved the move on Tuesday night, Times of Israel reported.
The U.S. was the first country to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 14, followed by Guatemala two days later.
Other countries, among them the Czech Republic and Brazil, have announced their intention to move their embassies to Jerusalem. Show more

Ramallah, unlike Jerusalem, will not see the U.S. plan for a permanent Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement until it is unveiled.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
The Palestinian Authority (PA) will not see the American peace plan before it’s presented to the world, Ma’ariv reported on Wednesday.
Ramallah, which broke off relations with the Trump administration after the U.S. Embassy was moved to Jerusalem in May, has reportedly offered to help in crafting the parameters of the agreement but was turned down. The report did not state when the offer was made.
This means that if and when the two sides return to the negotiating table, the Palestinian Authority will have the distinct disadvantage of not having been given any specific prior knowledge of its contents – versus the Israelis, whose input was requested.
The report also stated that once the long-awaited American deal is unveiled, its crafters, Trump son-in-law and special assistant Jared Kushner and US Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt, will step aside. A new diplomatic team will take over the mediating role during the actual talks between the two sides.
Various events in the region have contributed to the postponement of the plan’s rollout. At the opening session of the U.N. General Assembly in September, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned that he wanted the peace process to start within two to four months. Unnamed U.S. officials have now said that the plan most likely will not be unveiled until March or April. Of course, if elections in Israel are moved up from November, which is a possibility, the timetable for releasing the plan would most likely be pushed off once again.
The decision to freeze the Palestinians out of the formulating process – yet another blow to add to the funding cuts from the Trump administration – naturally angered them.
Kushner, who is a business tycoon like his father-in-law, believes the Palestinians will come to the table once the plan comes out. As he said in September, after the administration closed the PLO office in Washington, “In every negotiation I’ve ever been in, before somebody gets to ‘yes,’ their answer is ‘no.’” Show more

The Israeli prime minister warned Hezbollah that Israel is “prepared from all sides” to confront the Iranian-backed terror group.
By Associated Press and World Israel News Staff
Commenting on the IDF operation to expose and destroy a series of cross-border attack tunnels built by Hezbollah, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stern warning to the Lebanese terror group.
“If Hezbollah makes a big mistake and decides in any way to harm us or to resist the operation we are conducting, it will be dealt unimaginable blows,” said Netanyahu.
The prime minister added, “Hezbollah thought that it could dig unhindered. We knew, we planned, and it did not leak. We maintained secrecy; we planned carefully. We are carrying out exactly what we planned but we are ready for the unexpected. There is great firepower here. We are ready for it and are prepared for it from all sides.”
Netanyahu also vowed that the operation “will continue as long as necessary, until we completely deny Hezbollah the tunnels.”
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s president, Michel Aoun, claimed Tuesday that Israel’s Operation Northern Shield won’t endanger the calm along the frontier, adding that his country takes the issue seriously.
On Tuesday, however, the Israeli army placed explosives in a third Hezbollah tunnel, warning the group’s terrorists not to enter it.
The United Nations peacekeeping force (UNIFIL) tasked with patrolling the area confirmed the presence of two previous tunnels along the border. The mission’s head, Maj. Stefano Del Col, said he met with Aoun and Lebanon’s parliament speaker Tuesday and informed them that UNIFIL experts have inspected two tunnels near Metulla, along the border north of Israel.
“This is a serious matter and UNIFIL is working in close coordination with the parties both at the technical level as well as at the leadership level to ensure that all related facts are objectively determined and diligently addressed in line with U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701,” Del Col said in a statement.
Aoun, a Hezbollah ally, said that Lebanon is prepared to address the issue after assessing a full report on the situation.
Aoun said the United States has informed Lebanon that Israel has “no aggressive intentions,” adding that his country harbored none either.
“We are ready to remove the causes of the disagreements, but after we get the full report and decide what are the issues we need to handle,” Aoun said.
Israel launched an operation on Dec. 4 to destroy a series of tunnels, which represent a clear violation of the cease-fire that ended the 2006 war with Hezbollah.
De Col said the inspection of tunnels is a “work in progress” and vowed that UNIFIL will “make every effort to maintain clear and credible channels of communication with both sides so that there is no room for misunderstanding on this sensitive matter.” Show more

A Pakistani man claimed he stabbed his former professor for insulting his religion. French police say they found no connection to Islamic terror.
By Jack Gold, World Israel News
A Pakistani man stabbed his former university lecturer to death in Paris after the victim allegedly “insulted the Prophet Mohammed,” the Daily Mail reported Friday.
John Dowling of Ireland, 66, was stabbed 13 times last Wednesday outside the Leonardo de Vinci University in Paris, where he taught.
The assailant, identified only as Ali R., 37, confessed to the killing and told police he “held a personal grudge” against the teacher after failing his exams last year. Ali was indicted for murder.
CCTV footage shows Dowling chatting with Ali before the assailant pulled out a steak knife, purchased at a nearby market, and plunged it first into Dowling’s throat and then into his chest.
An eyewitness recounted how students overwhelmed Ali, while one of them tore off his shirt to try to staunch the bleeding, the Irish Times reported.
Catherine Denis, the prosecutor involved in the case, said Ali harbored an “obsessive resentment” against the university for expeling him in September 2017, the Mail reported.
Ali arrived in France two years ago to join the management school but failed his first year, Denis said. He had since returned to the college several times until he “became unwanted to the point that he was not allowed in anymore,” she added.

Ali claimed during police questioning that Dowling had made fun of his Muslim religion during classes Show more

“This sector’s vital signs are positive,” reports IVC Research in its summary of Israeli artificial intelligence startups.
By Brian Blum, Israel21c
Israel has a well-earned reputation as the Startup Nation. But it’s also becoming the AI Nation.
More than 1,200 artificial intelligence (AI) companies have been established in the country since 2010; 79 percent of them are still active and 6% have been acquired, reports IVC Research, which adds that “this sector’s vital signs are positive.”
Exits (where a company is either acquired or goes public) were higher in the first half of 2018 than for all of 2017, IVC adds.
The mix of AI companies in Israel has also changed – particularly in the last four years.
AI companies in Israel have traditionally focused on computer vision and this is where most of the development activity has been.
Jerusalem-based Mobileye, for example, builds systems that “watch” how your car is driving and sound an alert if you’re getting too close to another vehicle or veer out of your lane. Computer vision technology is now the basis behind Mobileye’s AI-centric approach to self-driving cars.
Beginning in 2014, though, there has been an increase in the share of companies implementing “data science” (a catchall name that encompasses data mining, statistical inference and prediction models) into their product lines. That’s been accompanied by a decrease in companies whose technology is more about computer vision, recommendation systems and text analysis.
IVC Research broke out the percentage of companies it tracks in each sector for the years 2010-2018.
– Recommendation systems (5%) – companies that use mathematical models to predict and recommend user preferences. Example: Outbrain, which has raised $144 million.
– Text analysis and NLP (8%) – companies which recognize and analyze the content and context of speech and text. Example: Twiggle, which has raised $35 million.
– Sound recognition and analysis (10%) – companies that analyze and process sounds for applications such as voice assistants. Example: Gong, which has raised $26 million.
– Chatbots, robotics and assistants (11%) – companies with technology that imitates a human interface. Example: Lemonade, which has raised $180 million.
– Computer vision (20%) – companies which acquire, process and analyze digital images. Example: Mobileye, which was acquired by Intel for $15.3 billion.
– Data science and analysis (43%) – companies that build statistical models for data mining and analysis. Example: Gett, which has raised $597 million. Show more

“As long as I am the Prime Minister of Israel, not a single Jew will be uprooted from his home,” Netanyahu vowed at the dedication of a new interchange in Judea and Samaria.
By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News
The only proper response to Palestinian terror is to build up Judea and Samaria, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday at the inauguration of the Adam Interchange.
The new junction, located in the Binyamin region and built at a cost of over NIS 60 million ($16 million), will cut the congestion between Jerusalem and the Israeli communities in Judea.
Netanyahu noted “the depth of our enemies’ hatred of us, Jews and Israelis,” referring to the terrorist incident Monday in Samaria that injured seven people, including a pregnant woman who was seriously wounded and underwent an emergency C-section. The infant boy remains in critical condition.
“We will prove to them that their desire to uproot us from our land will come up against a fortified wall…. As long as I am the prime minister of Israel, not a single Jew will be uprooted from his home,” the prime minister asserted.
He also promised that additional homes will be built and other transportation projects approved. This would tighten the connection between the capital and the places in the region where, he noted, “the core of the history of our people took place 3,000 years ago.”
Transportation Minister Yaakov Katz, who joined Netanyahu in cutting the ribbon to the new underground tunnel at the junction, told the crowd of around 200 that by 2030, Judea and Samaria will double its population to approximately 900,000. His ministry is doing its part, he said, by investing millions of shekels in the development of roads and improving transportation infrastructure throughout the region. Show more

China is tightening its grip on the country’s Christians through repeated efforts to persecute and silence the Church. The latest example happened Sunday when Communist party officials detained Pastor Wang Yi of the Early Rain Covenant Church and more than 100 members, according to The Wall Street Journal. Zhang Guoqing, an assistant deacon, told The South China Morning Post that pastor Wang’s home was raided.
“His home was ransacked. It was a mess,” Zhang said. “The police said our church is an illegal organization and we cannot attend any more gatherings from now on.” Pastor Wang is an outspoken critic of President Xi Jinping and his new regulations, which require all churches to be registered to the state. He organized a petition several months ago that condemned the government for targeting unregistered churches. The petition gained more than 400 signatures from pastors around the country. Show more

At least one person was killed and 10 people were wounded in a shooting near a Christmas market in the French city of Strasbourg on Tuesday, the local prefecture said. Police locked down the area and launched a hunt for the shooter, who fled the scene, the police sources said. They said the gunman had been identified. Local authorities told people in the city’s Neudorf area and Etoile park to stay where they were.
“There were gunshots and people running everywhere,” one local shopkeeper told BFM TV. “It lasted about 10 minutes.” France remains on high alert after a wave of attacks commissioned or inspired by Islamic State militants since early 2015, in which about 240 people have been killed. He advised his son-in-law to choose a group of elderly men to help him judge the people (Exodus 18: 17-26). The Sanhedrin was officially founded when God ordered Moses to choose 70 men from among the elders of Israel and bring them before the Tabernacle (the precursor of the Temple) where they would receive the anointing of the Spirit to judge the children of Israel (Numbers 11:16-17). This tribunal came to be known as the Sanhedrin, derived from the Greek word, sunedrion, which literally means, “sitting together.”
The two key movers behind the re-establishment of the Sanhedrin are Rabbi Ovadiah Josef and Rabbi Josef Elyashiv. The former is a chief rabbi of the Shephardic Jews (Mediterranean descent) and the latter a chief rabbi of the Ashkenazi Jews (European descent). Rabbi Josef Elyashir is considered to be a spiritual heir of Moses, and thus he was the one who performed the special ordination of the 70 rabbis selected to serve on the new Sanhedrin. He is also the prime candidate to serve as high priest should the temple be rebuilt and animal sacrifices be re-instituted.
The founding rabbis consider the new Sanhedrin to be “a work-in-progress.” Rabbi Halevi told the press: “The first members [of the Sanhedrin] requested that their names not be published so as to allow it to grow without public criticism of individuals. We want to give it time to develop and strengthen.” He added that each of the current members had agreed to be a conditional member until more knowledgeable rabbis decide to enter the ranks and take their place.
On Monday, the last day of Hanukkah, Guatemalan Ambassador Mario Adolfo Bucaro Flores discovered his Jewish identity at a Temple sacrifice reenactment in Jerusalem.
Heeding the Sanhedrin’s call to the 70 Nations to participate in the consecration of the altar for the Third Temple, the ambassador joined the reenactment as the guest of honor. During his speech, the ambassador said, “This is a truly historic moment. My government is pleased to be partners with the Sanhedrin and with Israel in bringing [the] Messiah.”
Little did Flores know the extent to which this moment was personally historic.
Immediately following the ambassador’s address, Breaking Israel News reporter Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz witnessed one of the rabbis from the Sanhedrin approach Flores, congratulating him on his “very powerful” address and asking him about his connection with the Jewish people. Flores responded, “Yes, the Guatemalan people have a very deep connection with the Jewish people.”
The rabbi responded, “But it seemed to come from a very deep personal place – do you have any personal connection with the Jewish people?”
Berkowitz recalled, “Flores replied, ‘no, no, I’m a Christian – but my Grandmother was Jewish.’”
After learning that Flores had Jewish relatives on his mother’s side of the family (according to Jewish law, Jewish status is matrilineal), the rabbis of the Sanhedrin, recovering from the immediate shock of the discovery they had just made, gathered around the ambassador.
“In the presence of the rabbinic court, Flores was asked several questions about his family and it was determined that he was a Jew,” said Berkowitz. “This came as a surprise to Flores who was unaware that his family connection conferred upon him Jewish status.”
Upon the discovery and to mark the occasion, reported Berkowitz, “the rabbis assisted Flores in donning tefillin (phylacteries) a mitzvah (Torah commandment) of the highest order,” also noting that “non-Jews can perform almost all of the Torah commandments, however, donning tefillin is one of the very few that they are forbidden from performing, so it was a clear sign that the Sanhedrin had entirely accepted his status as a Jew.”

After the ambassador put on tefillin for the first time, said Berkowitz, “everyone began dancing around and singing joyously – it was a very Geula (redemption) moment.”
Similarly, Rabbi Hillel Weiss, the spokesman for the Sanhedrin, noted that it was highly symbolic that such a revelation should come about at the dedication of the altar. “We are on the cusp of the revelation of the Moshiach (Messiah),” Rabbi Weiss told Breaking Israel News. “One of the functions of the Messiah is the ingathering of the exiles. This is not merely people deciding to come to Israel. It is a miraculous process, which is what we saw here. It is God revealing things that are hidden: hidden Jews, hidden connections to Israel, love for Hashem (God, literally, ‘the name) that has been hidden away and not seen since all 70 nations came together to pray to the One God in Jerusalem.”
In the near future, the Sanhedrin plans to visit the Guatemalan government on a political mission after Guatemala moved their embassy to Jerusalem on May 16 of this year, two days after the US opened their embassy in Jerusalem. Show more

A rabbi and a pastor opened a Bible and what happened? A New-Year’s project that will bring people of all faiths together from all around the world in one simple task intended to revive their faith: reading the Bible.
After meeting with Rabbi Tuly Weisz, the head of Israel 365, Pastor Keith Johnson, the founder of Biblical Foundations Academy International, was inspired to initiate the “Readers of the Book” project to inspire people around the world to build a biblical foundation for their faith. Pastor Johnson considers the project as a “grass roots program that could sweep the planet.”
“In Jewish tradition ‘the book’ has been the Bible,” Pastor Johnsons said. “Unfortunately, some groups in Christianity see the Bible, what they call the Old Testament, as a reference for their main study, which is the New Testament. They forget that before there ever was a New Testament, everyone studied the 24 books of the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings.”
The pastor noted that nothing could be more simple since joining the project is free and most people already have a Bible sitting on their shelf.
“There are many people who have the Bible in their homes but they have only read sections of it,” Pastor Johnson said. “Imagine this; the best selling book in history, inspired by God, they have it on their shelf, and they have only read sections. Doesn’t it seem important enough to read from beginning to end at least once?”
The pastor noted that even people who consider themselves to be well-versed in religion may not have read the Bible cover to cover.
“For Christians, reading the Bible is actually a radical thing,” Pastor Johnson said. “In the Jewish tradition, there is an annual cycle of reading, at least for the Torah accompanied by readings from the Prophets and the Writings.”
“We are getting people to go back to the basis of their faith, Jews and Christians. We are going to take one year to do that, connecting people from across the world.” Show more

The billion-yuan MRI machine “will revolutionize brain studies”, a senior scientist working on the project told Chinese media. The facility which will house the super-scanner is still being built in the city of Shenzhen in southern China’s Guangdong province. Hospital MRI scanners have a magnetic strength up to three tesla — but the new one is aimed to be as strong as 14 tesla. Show more

And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
This year has seen a record number of cases of a mysterious paralyzing illness in children, U.S. health officials said Monday. It’s still not clear what’s causing the kids to lose the ability to move their face, neck, back, arms or legs. The symptoms tend to occur about a week after the children had a fever and respiratory illness. No one has died from the rare disease this year, but it was blamed for one death last year and it may have caused others in the past.
What’s more, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials say many children have lasting paralysis. And close to half the kids diagnosed with it this year were admitted to hospital intensive care units and hooked up to machines to help them breathe. The condition has been likened to polio, a dreaded paralyzing illness that once struck tens of thousands of U.S. children a year. Those outbreaks ended after a polio vaccine became available in the 1950s. Investigators of the current outbreak have ruled out polio, finding no evidence of that virus in recent cases. Show more
